The book is a photocopied reprint of a U:Columbia 1912 book collecting ten lectures given on Greek Literature in 1911. It came as a pleasant and very interesting surprise, since the information given by Amazon had led me to believe that it was a contemporary classroom text by various authors. Lecturers came from various universities. You are exposed to 1911 standards in contents, style and language, and speaking generally I found it a very satisfying if unexpected experience. I enjoyed the majority of lectures and would like to mention those on "Epic Poetry", "Tragedy", "Comedy", "Oratory" and very especially "Philosophy", this one a true gem, a nugget. Generally the lecturers managed to breathe life into their subject, getting you under the skin of them ole Greeks, their ceremonials, feasts, plays, their social and political preoccupations, their reflective thinking about nature and man.
The lecture on Philosophy is quite outstanding. With supreme ease and authority, with wit and irony, Professor Woodbridge gives a rather personal overview from Thales to Aristoteles, slipping in quite a number of highly quotable remarks and sentences. You can read it d'un seul trait (that's supposed to be the appropriate French). It is the tutorial on Greek philosophy the world had been owing me for a very long lifetime, a fact I reflect on with not a little bitterness. A shame to have missed class with Professor Woodbridge, but then I was born too late and, to top it, in the wrong place.
It is perhaps fair to say that the book is hardly intended for the girl on the street or the man on the bus. Now if your library does not carry this book, take a hard look at your librarian, make a face to your librarian.
To think that if I had had better information from Amazon I might not have bought the book !! That would have been a real loss. As in quantum physics it seems that in book-buying incomplete information is valuable in making your day.
And just for the record: classical scholarship is not my line at all.
